The Colossus Of Rhodes

Where is it located?

The Colossus was located at the entrance of the harbour by the Mediterranean island of Rhodes. This is in Greece.

Created when? By whom?

The Colossus of Rhodes was built by Chares of Lindos. It took 12 years to build from 304 to292 BC. It only lasted for 56 years because an earthquake struck the city and broke the statue at its knees, its weakest point. It was a statue of their favourite god Helios and it earned a place in the famous list of wonders. They wanted to rebuild the statue but decided against it. For almost a millennium, (a thousand years), the statue was left in ruins.

Details about significance.

The statue was cast from bronze and was attached to a base of white marble. The outer bronze skin parts were strengthened with an iron and stone framework. When the Colossus was finished it stood at about 33 meters, 110 feet high. No-one really knows what the statue looked like. It was believed to have stood upright and may have been an inspiration for the Statue of Liberty in New York. The Colossus is regarded as one of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World and a masterpiece of art and engineering.

The Colossus is not in existence anymore as it was destroyed by a massive earthquake in 226BC. That is about 50 years after it was built.
